This quote from Alexander Hamilton is explaining how once you make a promise you should not break it. You shouldn't break your promise or someone else's because they will not trust, or like you (as a friend). When you don't keep a promise to someone it communicates to that person that we don't value with them anymore. We have chosen to put something else ahead of our commitment. Even when we break small promises others learn that they cannot count on us. And if people don't count on use they well not tell you anything anymore. For example, for us at school we can't break a teachers promise because they might not like you anymore or they will not see you as the same person. Our teachers promise is "Choose the right 24/7."
